FLOORS

Because it's eco-friendly, easy to maintain, it provides thermal and acoustic insulation, comfortable for walking barefoot, it has a unique design and it's very durable.

This precious raw material made from a special kind of Oak that grows mainly in the West Mediterranean area.

It's a tree that contribuite to preserve whole ecosystems; each year Mediterranean’s cork-oak forests absorb about 14 millions tonnes of carbon dioxine preventing the global warming.

The harvesting doesn’t require the cut of tree but only the barking of stem, that is regenerated every 9 year.

The use of cork's flooring become very popular at the end of the 19 century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright began using cork floors in public buildings he designed. Many of these buildings still have their original cork floors.

The cork floor is very resilient and has a high resistance to compression. Under heavy loads it can be crushed up to 40% and then return to its initial thickness thanks to the characteristic cellular structure of cork. It can bear intense pedestrian traffic as well as the pressure of heavy furniture.

Thanks to its cellular structure, containing millions of small air pockets, cork can withstand high pressures simply by compressing the air between cells. When the pressure is no longer exerted, the cork resumes its original shape. This particular feature is called resilience or "memory effect".

It can be used in any room, at home and in the office. Thanks to its naturally resistant to water and insects, it is common to floor kitchens with cork because it is hygienic and easy to clean.

When properly maintained, the floor can last forever. Maintenance is the care and cleaning of your floor. Stones, sand and dirt can cause wear and tear if not removed for a long period of time. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents as these may affect the natural properties of cork.

The cork floors are covered with a finish that in the long run could be ruined by cat and dog claws. However, because cork is resilient, its surface is more resistant to abrasion than any other wooden floor.

Cutting and caring for your four-legged friend's nails will help you keep your floor well cared for. Good maintenance such as applying a wax will remove any small scratches caused by animals.

Cork floors are made of high density cork and designed to withstand heavy foot traffic including stiletto heels. Thanks to its elasticity and memory effect has an excellent recovery after crushing. However, like all floors can be damaged by sharp objects or heavy furniture, so we recommend the use of protective rubbers or felts.

Absolutely nothing, just think of the corks or floats of fishermen's fishing nets.

The cells of the cork are naturally coated with a waxy substance (suberine) that makes them impermeable to liquids. However, you must avoid leaving stagnant water on the floor because it could infiltrate the joints in case of floating floor.

Thanks to its elastic and porous structure, cork is an excellent sound-absorbing material. Unlike other wooden floors you won't hear any creaking noise and you will have a 17 dB sound reduction of footfall noise.

Natural cork is self-extinguishing with a good fire resistance that may vary depending on the finish used on. In any case, in the event of fire, if the cork burns, it does not release toxic gases.

The floating floor can be laid on any type of support (even on top of existing old floors) as long as it is stable, sufficiently level, clean and dry.

For laying glue-down floors, the surface must be completely level, smooth and free of any residue of paint, dirt, oil, grease, etc.. When laying on an old carpet, rubber, vinyl, etc. floor, you must remove them and the surface must be smooth and well levelled, otherwise a self-levelling agent must be applied to regularise the substrate. In case of laying on ceramic or stone tiles, a self-levelling agent must be applied first to fill in the joint lines, make the surface even and make it flat and well levelled.

COATINGS

How can I insulate a cold and damp north-facing wall?

If the wall is slightly cold with moisture condensation it can be insulate by doing:

  • A low thickness external insulation system with BioFlex Pan or BioFlex Roll

Or otherwise if you want an exposed cork effect it can be insulate by doing:

  • A decorative cork covering that you can choose between 2mm rolls, 3mm panels or 3D
  • A low thickness external insulation in a double layer with BioFlex Pan or BioFlex Roll + a decorative cork covering that you can choose between 2mm rolls, 3mm panels or 3D

If the wall is very cold and not very insulated, it can be insulate by doing:

  • A levelled external insulation with BioCork or BioPan

Or otherwise if you want an exposed cork effect it can be insulate by doing:

  • An exposed external insulation with BioPan
  • A double layer external insulation with BioPan + A decorative cork covering that you can choose between 2mm rolls, 3mm panels or 3D

I rivestimenti vanno posati con la nostra Colla Wakol D 3540, una colla a contatto, in dispersione acquosa, certificata in classe A+, priva di solventi e a bassissima emissione di inquinanti volatili nell'aria.
